Meet the Team

First Optic has been an independently run and owned Opticians since it was established in 1996. It is now owned and run by Kiranjeet Matharu.

After qualifying in 2001 Kiran had several years working in community optometry and has five years experience working in a hospital environment and as part of the wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) team. She is post graduate qualified in Glaucoma and Medical Retina and was the first Optometrist in Powys to complete the independent prescribing course. Kiran was also the first Optometrist in Wales to be granted the use of a prescription pad in practice allowing for the management of certain eye conditions and therefore reducing the need to refer certain conditions to Opthamology or to a GP.

We are also an Eye Health Examination Wales (EHEW) accredited practice, which means we are able to examine patients free (funded by the Welsh Assembly Government) should they have any sudden eye emergency or be referred directly from their doctor.

We have recently invested in an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanner that allows the Optometrist to see beneath the surface of the retina picking up microscopic changes not visible to the naked eye. Kiran's experience in hospital and her Medical Retina certificate means she is more than qualified to read the scans.

The staff include Optometrists, Kiran Matharu BSc (Hons ) MCOptom, Jackie, Tracy & Julie.

The practice is located in the centre of the market town of Brecon in Mid-Wales and offers a friendly and professional service for all the family.
